COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | July 9 Week

How can we pray for one another this week? An easy way to do so is to pray through the new prayer map here. As always, post a comment for specific prayer by clicking on "Post a Comment" or "COMMENTS" below.

It was saddening to hear the recent remarks by the Catholic Church (read here). Although committed to ecumenical discussion (i.e. discussing between all different denominations), they declared themselves to be the only "full" Churches of Christ. Pray for the same spirit of unity for which Jesus prayed (John 17), that rather than bickering among ourselves, we would as the Church worldwide actually focus on the mission for which God has created and sent us!

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | July 2 Week

David led us in prayer on Sunday night, through many specific requests that have been on the website over the past couple of weeks. To view all of the weekly postings, click on the label "Community Prayer".

This week, we are introducing the prayer points map. For an explanation of the concept, check out the post below. Click on any red circle with a star to see details about the person/place and specific prayer requests. We encourage not only to pray for those specific requests, but for the places as well - that we would bring healing, reconciliation, grace, forgiveness and love to the places we are throughout the week. Note, you can also click on the names on the left to view where specific people are through the week. Here's the map.

If you are not yet included, please read this form and email your response to tilt.toronto@gmail.com!! I'll get you on the map ASAP :).

As always, please leave specific prayer requests, stories, praises by commenting on this post. Click on "COMMENTS" below or go here.

Prayer Points | Praying for Our Communities

If you've ever walked into a church before, chances are there was a map of the world with pictures of various missionaries whom the church body had supported in their activities. This is a wonderful idea, but it neglects the reality that each and every one of us is sent by the church, our faith community, to be a sign of God's Kingdom in the places we are each and every day. We are called to authentically live as children of God, bringing compassion, justice, love, mercy, tenderness and grace to the places we are - at home, at work, on the sports field, in the coffee shop, at the grocery store, wherever.

So, here is our "prayer points" map! Any ideas for a better name? If you click on the image above, or go here, a map of Toronto will open up with various red circles scattered throughout the city. As TILT, we gather together on Sunday evening, but for the rest of the week, we are the scattered community of TILT. This map gives us an opportunity to pray for one another in the places we are throughout the week. Not only that, but to pray for the communities, places of work, schools, etc. themselves. Pray that we would reveal the goodness and graciousness of God wherever the people of TILT are as we live out the values of God's Kingdom. For a picture of what God's Kingdom is like, check out Psalm 145 here, (or any other number of biblical passages, stories, especially the life of Jesus!).

We would like as many people involved and represented on this map as possible. If you aren't yet on it, please check out this form here and email a response to tilt.toronto@gmail.com or give it to anyone on leadership at the next TILT gathering. If your information is out of date, please send updates to the same email!

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | June 26 Week

What do you think of the picture? I initially put it up more for amusement than anything. But, as we prayed yesterday during the day, God has already created a perfect community, mirroring the unity of the Trinity - the community of Father, Son and Spirit. We do not have to create unity, it is there for us to take hold of! We can't excuse our disunity as a result of our "imperfectness" - we are united in Christ by the Holy Spirit already! May TILT reflect this unity and may the world know God by the love we have one another. I'll pray for that!

As always post your own prayer requests/stories for praise here.

A few other things we can pray for:
At TILT:
:. There are potentially, from what I know, four families from TILT (Halls/Adams/Moores/Kays) all moving within the next month. This can often be a stressful time and difficult in moving from a certain neighbourhood. May God grant peace and a sense of excitement about moving into a new neighbourhood. What is exciting for us (I speak for myself [Scott] only here, but I'm sure the others would agree) is that we are all moving into the same neighbourhood around Yonge & Sheppard. An awesome opportunity to be missionaries together in the area around Spring Garden! Are there any other people moving that we can pray for?
:. Continue to pray for Matt's step-brother Trevor and his family as they care for him.
:. Continue to pray for Martin as he prepares to head to France. Read more here.
:. We had a good day-long meeting yesterday as TILT leadership (thanks for praying). Pray that what God spoke to us and what became clear to us through the day would be brought into practice. In particular, pray for unity between TILT and the broader Spring Garden community - we affirm our part of that community and want to seek to be truly committed to one another in support and unity.

Broader Community:
:. There is supposed to be a First Nations blockade from Toronto to Montreal on Friday (read more here). This is a "national day of action". I'm not even sure what or how to pray for this. The First Nations people have been hurt so badly and yet confrontation and violence will not bring reconciliation in this nation. This is especially poignant for us as we can visibly be people of reconciliation as we visit the Moose Deer Point First Nations Reserve in August.

Resources for the Week | 06/26 - 07/03

This week we have switched our lectionary to the one found in "For All the Saints: A Prayer Book For and By the Church". This is a lectionary that was designed to be used across all denominations, and I think this is something we all value - emphasizing the unity of the Body of Christ (the Church) in practical ways such as reading Scripture together across all denominations.

As a result, you will notice this week we'll be reading a couple of times from the book of "Ecclesiasticus", which is an Apocryphal book. Typically not included in the Protestant Bible, it is read by Catholics and some Anglicans (I think?! Matt A, am I right?). If you print out your resources, use the Divine Offices Calendar to find these texts as I imagine none of us have a Bible with the Apocrypha in it!

The resources for this week can be found here:

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | June 19 Week

We have now finished our series entitled "Moth and Rust". It's been a seven-week journey (I think) of looking at various Scriptures relating to a spirituality of money and giving our everything to Christ. How has God spoken to you through these Scriptures and the gatherings at TILT? How can we pray for one another to respond to God with action in our lives?

Some things that came up for prayer last night:
:. Martin Dewar is headed to France in July. Read about it here. Pray for him!
:. Pray for Matt's step-brother Trevor, for his caregivers throughout this week.
:. Pray for Laura's friend Julia how is grieving the loss of family members very suddenly.

Please post anything else by clicking on "COMMENTS" below!! You can always post anonymously, or write in your comment that you don't want it to be published and only TILT leadership will pray for you.

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | June 12 Week

On Sunday night, we spent time in small groups of 3-4 praying for one another. If you were at TILT, continue to lift the people in your group up in prayer. If you feel comfortable, please post the prayer requests you had so that more people from within the community can journey with you in prayer!! Post here.

We also learned on Sunday night that Rick Wukasch is leaving Spring Garden Church for another opportunity as a pastor with the Meeting House. Pray for him as he makes this transition. We will miss him!

Please pray for discernment as we seek people for the community connections trip to Moose Deer Point Reserve to run a kids' day camp. Our heart is that this be the beginning of a long-term relationship, but we want to make sure this is God's desire and not just ours! If you want more info, go here.

Of course, there are always things happening around our city and our world which we have the privilege of praying for with God. The looming renewed Cold War comes to mind. Please post anything else! Are there things at your places of work for which we can pray? Relationships? Government?

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | June 3 Week

Last night, we prayed through the Lord's Prayer several times and used part of it to lead us in praying for our community and beyond. The version of the Lord's Prayer we used is here under The Daily.

Our prayer time was specifically centered around this part of the prayer:
"Bring about Your kingdom.
Manifest Your will here on earth,
as it is manifest in heaven."

Stemming from this, we prayed through Psalm 145:9-16.

Please post comments, prayer requests, stories of God's Kingdom being revealed here on Earth!

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | May 27 Week

Bill spoke to us on Sunday about having a heart as a community after the heart of God. This is what God said through the prophet Isaiah.
Isaiah 58:

This is the kind of fasting I want:
Free those who are wrongly imprisoned;
lighten the burden of those who work for you.
Let the oppressed go free,
and remove the chains that bind people.
7 Share your food with the hungry,
and give shelter to the homeless.
Give clothes to those who need them,
and do not hide from relatives who need your help.

8 “Then your salvation will come like the dawn,
and your wounds will quickly heal.
Your godliness will lead you forward,
and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.
9 Then when you call, the Lord will answer.
‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply.

Let's pray through this passage this week. How can we at TILT reflect God's heart in our community? Please post any thoughts, words, comments, issues, reflections, challenges...as always, personal requests can be posted so we can pray for one another.

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | May 14 Week (and probably part of May 21 week as well!)

Hello friends!

On Sunday we had some exciting announcements! Scott and Kate are now husband and wife! Monica is going to be induced Friday May 18! Jen-Mai has a new 7 pound 12 oz nephew Jakob Alexander Peterson as of May 10 (the top picture)!! And Jay and Michelle had their daughter Rylie Noelle McIntyre also May 10, (middle pictures)!!! Super exciting! Plus, here is a picture of Trev and Gwyneth's Annie for those of you not with us when we showed her off! (bottom picture).

This last Sunday night and throughout the week we also had the opportunity to pray for one another about many things... Nick's mom going to England to care for her sister just out of surgery but missing her chemo because of it, all the new mom's and mom's to be in our community, Les' colleagues' husband who received the lungs he needed for surgery, Conrad's struggle with his job and being in a "valley" time in life... I forgot to take notes, so if there were some that I have forgotten, please post them! Also, we as a community have been invited by zoecarnate.com to be part of praying and working against present day slavery throughout the globe, which is a huge issue of justice to which the Church should be responding. For specific information, please check out http://www.mychurch.org/notforsalecampaign

In new and sad news, Marion Goertz's father passed away this week. Please continue to pray for Marion and Donald Goertz as they have now lost two parents in a months time.

Please post comments throughout the week to let us know how you're doing, if there are places we can pray in thanksgiving or requests!

Christ be with you!

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | May 7 Week

On Tuesday night, anyone is welcome to join the broader Spring Garden community in an evening of prayer at the church at 7:30 pm.

We continue to affirm this weekly posting as a place where we can 'gather' together throughout the week to journey with one another, pray for one another and listen to one another's stories. Nick spoke to us about his journey with respect to the story in John 21 and the reality of the cost of following Jesus. Pray through the reality of following Jesus - what will this cost you? What will it look like? How does TILT as a community whole follow Jesus? How are we to respond to his words to feed his sheep - ALL his sheep, not just the ones we agree with, like or the ones that believe what we believe?

Post your comments throughout the week!

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | May 1Week

Rebecca led us in prayer this Sunday evening - guiding us through praying for one another as a TILT community, for our city, Toronto and for broader international issues. Scott challenged us to hear the mission to which God is calling TILT - to receive it and respond to it in faith. Please post any reflections, thoughts, answers to prayer and of course prayer needs!

One thing on our hearts as leadership today was marriage. We were praying specifically for one person, but we know the numbers tell us that on the whole Christian marriage is no better off than society as a whole. Pray for marriages within the TILT community, but also the institution of marriage as a whole!

As always, please post through the comments!

Our Stories | Diana Marello

In regards to TILT: I have so loved it. Just shortly after the night of the commissioning, I was asked three times...not once (just like Peter!)...by the staff of the Sanctuary to come to the drop-in for women. I prayed and I believe that this is where I needed to be now. I went yesterday afternoon and it felt just right! God is good! It felt so wonderful to be with my buds there. I will be going there on Tuesday afternoons from now on. Praise the Lord!

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | April 22 Week

A number of things came up in prayer at TILT last night as Jen-Mai led us: Praying for the healthy pregnancies of Michelle, Monica and Shelby. Praying for discernment for Matt as He seeks God going forward past seminary. Praying for leadership at TILT and Spring Garden as a whole. We continue to pray for the after-effects of last week's shooting at Virginia Tech.

Greg spoke truthfully and powerfully to us about our human condition - rather than just following Jesus, we so easily start looking at others' journeys and wish we had theirs. We compare ourselves - either berating ourselves or pridefully building ourselves up. Pray through this throughout the week, asking God to see where in your life you are more distracted and motivated by others' journeys rather than just following Jesus.

It is also important that we pray through this as a community - as Greg told us. Is the community of TILT trying to be something other than a group of people following Jesus in the context of a specific community? What draws us away from this? Let us simply be a group of people authentically following Jesus and sharing that journey together.

As always, please post thoughts, prayer requests, whatever we can to share our journeys with one another.

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | April 17 Week

You may remember this image from the two weeks when we did the Stations of the Cross and our Easter Celebration. The image is meant to represent Jesus after his resurrection, when Mary mistook him for a gardener. Gene commented that it took him almost the whole time of worship to realize it.

Sometimes in the midst of this world, it is hard to see the resurrected Jesus! How do you need the hope of the resurrection in your life right now? How do those around you need it? Other places in the world? Our city?

Please, as always, post your responses to the above and anything else that we can pray for, celebrate, and reflect upon. Have a great week.

How can we respond in prayer and celebration to the resurrection of the crucified Jesus? What does it mean for us today in our lives? What does it mean for a world full of pain, suffering, hurt, broken relationships? How can we both bring and embody hope to those around us? If Christ is resurrected and we are His living Body, the tangible expression of Him in this world, where is God leading us?

Please post those places where we can pray both for hope in your own life, and also for you to bring hope to those around you. Death has been conquered! Let us be people of the resurrection, albeit always grounded in the crucifixion.

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | April 3 Week

One of the stations on Palm Sunday was about Jesus Dying on the Cross (read the handout here). When Jesus died, the curtain which separated God from the rest of the world (symbolically) was torn. Gene's question to us was:

But I wonder – did the veil rip so we could enter the heart of
the temple? Or did the veil rip so God could get out?
How does the death of Jesus bring you into closer and more
intimate relationship with God? Are you actually utilizing that access?
How does God want to get out into the world through you?

Pray through these questions this week. Pray for the places God 'wants to get out into' through you. As always, post your thoughts, reflection, prayer requests and stories here!

COMMUNITY Life & Prayer | Week of March 26

Last night, since the commissioning went a little over time, we missed out on a planned time of prayer, which is totally fine because we firmly believe in commissioning everyone and we were all really excited about it I think! So, this post will center on what was going to be the focus of our time in prayer at TILT last night.

The premise of commissioning is, of course, that we are sent out into the world, to the places where we already are. Yes, God may call you elsewhere, but where you are right now is where God has called you!

So, let's spend the week praying for the places to which we have been sent, the people to whom we have been called to serve and things to which we have been commissioned to do.

Post a comment as you desire and we can pray for one another as a community - where do you work? who do you interact with? what do you do? To whom has God sent you? Post your thoughts and we can journey together through our commissioning and pray for one another.

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | March 20

Here is our weekly space to share with one another as a community throughout the week. What can we pray for as a community - for TILT, for Toronto, for Canada, for the world? Who are the people we are interacting with and how can we pray for them? Post your comments and we can pray for one another.

Some things that came up on Sunday night:
Thank you, Lord! Becki and Barb both shared encouraging stories of God's work in their lives - Becki in raising support and Barb in a job for the summer.

Continue to pray for healing for Jen-Mai. And the health of mother and baby for Monica and Michelle (and fathers too! [Greg and Jay]).

The federal budget was announced yesterday. Pray for accountability in funding, use of resources with integrity, that they may be used justly, equitably and fairly.

Please, post anything else we can pray for!

COMMUNITY Life & Prayer | Week of March 4

Last night was our communion potluck and we spent some time praying for one another. If you were there last night, continue to pray through some of the things that were raised at your table. Here were the questions which guided our prayer:

Jesus’ prayer: “I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one”. Pray for unity as a TILT community, Spring Garden community and for the church throughout Toronto and Canada.

God has made us competent ministers of His Good News. Pray for eyes to see opportunities to be ministers in both word and deed, and for courage to respond to them!

Pray for one another about areas of our lives where we struggle to trust God. What are we anxious about? Where do we need both discernment and trust?

COMMUNITY Life & Prayer | Week of February 25

Stemming from last night's conclusion of the Reconstructing the Call series - how is God leading you in prayer? Are there areas where the community can pray for you in terms of the details of your life? Seeing your job as a ministry? Building in trust of God rather than depending upon clarity in everything? Post your comments belows by clicking on "Comments".

Praying for politicians: Quebec's provincial election is coming up soon - always hotly contested and full of rhetoric.

Praying for widows and orphans: There are 27,000 Inuit children who live in foster homes. Pray for justice, and safe homes.

Praying for God's creation: The Conservatives are soon to release their "Green" plan. Pray that it would lead us in being good stewards of our country.

A request from our community: Peter D'Angelo and Bill Hall will be speaking to the youth on Wednesday about sexuality. I think we all know how distorted sexuality has become in our society. Pray that God's truth will be shown to the youth with respect to their bodies and sexuality.

Our Stories | Becki Lee

I strongly believe that like many things in life, hearing from God is something that requires an investment of time in order to see fruit. Last spring, I was blessed with both the opportunity and desire to do just that. This was the first time in my life where I made a habit of devoting an extended period of time to prayer. To not only pray by speaking to God, but also by intentionally listening.

I am someone who thrives on structure and specific direction, which the book “Conversation with God” by Lloyd John Ogilvie provided for me as I delved into two-way prayer. One of the key components of prayer that he outlined was a time for silence and listening. At first, as is often the case with something new, I struggled to quiet my mind in order to hear God’s voice. With some practice though, I began to cherish these times and to hear specific things from God.

One such occasion of hearing from God came at the end of May when I simply asked God “What do you want to speak to me today?” and focused my mind until I felt His words forming.

“Move out” He said to me.
“Move out?” I questioned, “But Lord I just moved in!”

At the time I had been living in a new apartment for less than three weeks when I heard this directive. Why would God be leading me to move out of a place I had lived for less than a month, a decision in which I had felt His strong confirmation just weeks before? “This doesn’t make sense,” I remember thinking to myself. “I don’t know if this is really from God.” Given my predicament, I decided to pray a prayer of putting on the armour of God from Ephesians 6.
I really can’t explain what happened next, but the next thing I heard was “Move out...into new territory,” the way a military general would command his troops.

“New territory?” I asked.
“Move out into new territory” I heard again. “Take ground for my kingdom. Ryerson.”

Now in order to fully understand what God was speaking to me, I should explain a little about my work. I work in full time ministry with Athletes in Action, the sports ministry of Campus for Christ, at York University and the University of Toronto. So, it was clear to me that God was blessing and encouraging me to step out in faith and begin the process of developing a ministry at Ryerson University. God’s directive was further confirmed later the same day when I spoke to my co-worker Monica who told me she had been sensing a similar leading from God about Ryerson. So I began to explore some possibilities and move in this direction.

Although we are not yet actively doing anything at Ryerson due to a variety of circumstances, I still believe that it is God’s will that when we are more able, we will begin to do so. I also believe that this word from God was a general encouragement that I need to hold on to for my life ministry, both personally and professionally.

Divine Offices or 1x Day | Thoughts & Reflections

Post any thoughts or reflections as you go through the Divine Offices (or the Once-A-Day!) here. Simply click on "comments" belows and add your thoughts (using the 'Other' identity).

This morning we are reading Psalm 5 and I was struck by verse 7: "Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house; I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe." It is not by our works that we enter the presence of God, or are in relationship by Him. Only by his grace, the outpouring of His love may we have any relationship with God. Amen! Our only response can be one of awe, that God would desire a relationship with us.

Divine Offices | February 20 - 26

Is anyone finding themselves in a new rhythm of reading and prayer with the practicing of the Divine Offices? I find it hard when my days are so varied, but have appreciated the continual beckoning back to prayer throughout the day.

Here are the Offices for this week. Of course, you can always use the online Divine Offices calendar!

COMMUNITY LIFE & PRAYER | February 18

And so begins another week...although it didn't appear to be easy to post to this at TILT tonight, that was a PowerPoint issue, NOT website issue. It's easy! Really! Just go to 'Comments' at the bottom of this post, click on it and tell us your story and how we can pray for you or praise with you. If you have troubles email tilt.toronto@gmail.com.

Continue to pray for Barb in Scotland (see TILT main page and search for Barb and you'll hear her story), and Jen-Mai for healing in her back.

I would encourage you to check out the Divine Offices or The Once-A-Day approach, in which there are general categories of prayer that people within the TILT community are praying through - our city, our country, our government, TILT, friends, family, the Church around the world, the poor, the homeless, the persecuted, the list goes on!

If you feel overwhelmed when it comes to prayer sometimes, be encouraged:

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. - Romans 8:26-27

Community Prayer | Week of February 11

As always, please add your prayer requests/life updates/etc. here by clicking on "Comments" at the bottom of this post and add your comment (it is easiest to select "Other" identity and type in your name).

This past Sunday we talked about being called to creation. Although Gene was sick, we broke into small groups to discuss and prayer this whole topic which is at the forefront of all media coverage these days. Admittedly, my small group had a fairly heated discussion about the whole topic of stewardship of creation and its value in the economy of God. Does it really matter? Isn't it just about saving souls? Although I have a {strong} opinion about this, I think it is a valuable thing for us to all pray through. What is God's heart? What does He care about? Should we care about it too? How are we caring about it or not? Pray for the Spirit's guidance!!

Trev & Gwyneth posted a comment on the Called to Ministry video, and, well, let's pray for them! If you don't know them, they were a vital part of our community for a couple of years but have returned home to New Zealand. Gwyneth is pregnant, we can always pray for the health of mom and baby. And also adjusting back to life in Kiwi-land.

Pray for TILT - what do we exist for? What does God desire of this community? Who are we being called to reach out to? TILT is not about us, it's about God and His design for it.

Okay, this list could go on, but I have a sermon outline due tomorrow!! Have a great week and may you hear God's call to you throughout the week.

Divine Offices | Thoughts

As I read Psalm 1 this morning, I was struck by the notion of delighting in the Law. We, as Christians, have a distorted view of the Law (Torah/Instruction) and often toss it out the window because we think it's "old", or "useless" at best. I think the root of this comes from a lot of Paul's writing about the law, but we misunderstand him. When Paul talks about law, he is talking about the Jewish people's perversion of Torah into a religious code, rather than a living address of God to his people. So, how can we take delight in the Law? How can we see grace in the Law - it's there!

COMMUNITY PRAYER | FEBRUARY 5 - 11

Please post any requests, praises, concerns, troubles, joys, anything via the comments so that we can pray for one another as a community. Simply click on "Comments" at the bottom of this post.

This week, our focus was on being 'called to ministry' - and how we all are ambassadors for Christ. Monica read to us from Matthew 9: "36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." Let's pray for more workers!

Support one another as we go about our weeks in prayer, that we may see opportunities to share Christ as an overflow of our relationship with Him. Think of those in TILT who are teachers (Sarah, Nick, Anne, Cheryl, Laura...), students (Matt A, Mat B, Greg K, Andrea L, David L, Katie W, Ben W to name a few...), in 'paid'/'official' ministry (we need a better word for this!) of some sort (Monica K, Becki L, Jason M, Jan D), as well as anyone else! Post comments to let us know what's happening in your life so we can pray for you.

Climate change has become the number one news issue, as well as the top concern of all Canadian voters (higher than health care). A report released last week unequivocally backed up the trend of global warming. Pray that this would not become a political spin issue, but would be dealt with honestly, and effectively. How can we as a community make changes? God, what sacrifices do we need to make as a community, a church body, individuals?

Week of January 29 | Community Prayer

Check in here regularly to see what is happening in TILT's community, specifically with respect to prayer. Prayer is about relationship - first and foremost with God, but also with one another. In many situations, there is not greater way to love a person than to pray for them earnestly before God. We want to hear what is happening in your life and how we can pray for you! Simply add a comment to do so [unsure about comments? Read this].
Prayer this week:

  • Jen-Mai's focus on Sunday was praying for the impossible? What are those impossible things that you hardly dare to pray to God about? Pray for them!
  • a continued and growing understanding of how we are first called to God, not to an activity or place
  • responding to the challenge of Sabbath - how can we meaningfully practice the Sabbath and obey God's command?
  • our city - always so much going on - garbage crises, violence
  • our country - the furor over global warming - may our politicians actually do something meaningful about this!, the Robert Pickton trial - may justice be served, protection for jurors, families affected and even the general public as they hear and listen to some horrifying things

Please, post comments here. They can even just be filling the TILT community in on a small thing that happened in your life, where you need prayer or are thankful for God's presence and action. (NOTE: when filling in comments, just select "Other" as your identity and put in your name!)

Divine Offices Thoughts

It is Day 3 of implementing this new spiritual discipline in our lives (for those of us trying to do so of course!). The challenge for me is already not to "plow through" each office as I'm speeding to my next activity, but to truly "pause" and hear what God is saying through the Scripture and in prayer.

I was struck by Psalm 125:3 in Vigils this morning: "The wicked will not rule the land of the godly, for then the godly might be tempted to do wrong." The godly are those whose trust is in the Lord, who security is guaranteed forever. I love this because the verse is saying that the godly have complete sovereignty because of the Lord's protection - we will never be forced or tempted to do things that go against the will of God.

Please, comment as you go through the Offices, or any sort of meditation/spiritual discipline.

Isaiah 49:1-12
Galatians 2:11-21
Mark 6:13-29
Psalm 125

Song:
In Christ Alone
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on m
For I am His, and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the pow’r of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No pow‘r of Hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘Till He returns, or calls me home
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand

Week of January 22 - Community Prayer

This is the weekly post in which we'll put up some prayer requests and also hear about how God has answered specific prayer. (Do you ever wonder how many things you pray for and then never look for or listen to the answer?) So, these posts will never go away, so it'll be great to look back on them and see how God answers prayer!

Please, by clicking on "Comments" at the bottom of this post, put your own prayer requests/God responses up on the blog so we can pray as a community together. The requests below are just off the top of my head at 11:30 on a Saturday night, so please, really do add your requests.

TILT Community as a whole:
o Continually seeking God's vision for the community;
o Opportunities to engage the community around us with the Good News of God's Kingdom;
o Finding ways people can become involved in the worship gatherings and leading the community in other areas;
o Seeking the true, scriptural meaning of "God's Call" as we go through the series Reconstructing the Call.

Specific People:
o Barbara Erochina is going to Scotland to do some ministry at the University of Edinburgh - pray for help in raising support and being able to impact people in Scotland;
o Pregnant moms-to-be at TILT (I didn't ask for permission yet, so no names, but if you go to TILT, you know who these people are hopefully!);

The City:
o An Out of the Cold shelter was approved for opening in the Beaches (I mean, The Beach) area - awesome! Pray for volunteers, community support;

The World:
o Isn't this overwhelming sometimes?
o Iraq / U.S. situation;
o AIDS in Africa;

The Once-A-Day Approach

Everyone it seems has a different way of spending time with God in a day. Words like “devotionals” or “quiet times” are used to speak about intentional time designated in a day for spending with God. Some of the most common ways this time is spent is in prayer, worship, and reading Scripture or devotional guides. We wanted to be able to provide a resource for these daily designated times for God for those who do not have one, are looking for something different, or to supplement something else you may be doing. Obviously, you are welcome to use this in any way you want! Of course, prayer, worship and Bible reading are not an end in and of themselves. They exist solely to foster an intimate relationship with God.

We have set these up so that each day has a Lectionary Scripture reading for the day (see below for what a Lectionary is!), part or all of a worship song, general prayer suggestions, and links to prayer requests.

There are many denominational traditions in the Christian Church who, for the purpose of being united with one another across the globe, will use what is called a Lectionary, which is essentially set Scripture readings for each week or each day over either a two year or three year cycle (i.e. you read the entire Bible in two years or three years. We’re using the 2 year one). Although when TILT gathers together for worship we don’t plan our time around the Lectionary, it is still a great devotional resource for us.

Divine Offices

If you would prefer to have the whole week of the Offices in one document rather than using the online calendar, we'll provide a document each week. It is 7 pages, so if you don't have to print it, that would be a nice bonus. We'll work on a smaller table format!

How do I use the Divine Offices?

We have set up the offices in a calendar format, with the 8 offices laid out each day. Each office is at a suggested ballpark time (e.g. upon waking up, coffee break, lunch, etc.) - they can take as little as 2 minutes to go through or as long as you desire to meditate upon them.

To use the Divine Offices calendar, simply click on the Divine Offices link on the sidebar under "Urban Monks@TILT links". The calendar will show up in an agenda format on today's date. Simply click on the desired office. There will be a designated scripture, prayer topic and a link to Bible Gateway for the scripture verses. That's it!

Note, if you are using Internet Explorer and have pop-up blocker on "High", you will notice an information bar comes up when you try to open a specific office. Click on the bar and select "Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site...". Or click CTRL as you select an office with your mouse to override the blocker function. Email TILT if you have a problem.

Still wondering: What are the Divine Offices? How do I set my version to the New Living Translation?

What are the Divine Offices?

Originating from Jewish tradition of praying throughout the day, the Divine Offices/hours developed early in the history of Christianity with the first followers of Christ and continues today. By pausing regularly throughout the day to pray and read scripture one is able to pattern all of life in worship and prayer.

Based on scriptures such as Psalm 119:164, “Seven times a day I will praise You”, Psalm 63:6 “on my bed I remember You; I think of You through the watch of the night”, and similar verses (Psalm 1:2, Psalm 16:7, Psalm 119:97, etc.), 8 different times of the day emerged, 7 during the day and one during the night. The most well known and time-honoured development of this is “The Rule of St. Benedict” (which we have loosely followed) written by the well-known monk himself in the 6th century. He wrote it in order that the rhythm of life for the monks in his monasteries would be based and centred on worship and prayer, but it can also be a great tool for us in the city who seek to do the same in the midst of an urban lifestyle.

If you’re interested in reading it, you can find the rule in its entirety here.

We’ve tried to set this up in such a way that from a computer at home or work you can easily pause to read scripture and simple prayer. Recognizing that very few of us find it easy to carve time out of our day, these are set up in such a way that you could read/pray through them in as little as 2 minutes or you can take longer to meditate and pray through the scriptures and prayer suggestions. In this way we can increasingly give time to God throughout our day as we seek to pattern our lives in prayer and worship as urban monks.

May the Lord be with us as we seek to give all of our days to Him!

Still wondering: How do I use the Divine Offices @ TILT?

Prayer Requests & Responses

The beauty of a blog is being able to comment on any posts. So, we will have a weekly post on the subject of community prayer. The post will have prayer requests, but using the comments function, anyone can add their own prayer requests to the post. Thus, as we are praying through the Divine Offices, we can quickly link to the community prayer and view what needs prayer. Of course, we pray in expectation of God answering, and so it's always amazing to hear how God responds to our prayer and see how He is moving in the TILT community.

If you want to know how to use comments, check out the How-To Post.

NOTE: All comments must be approved by the TILT webmaster prior to being published on the blog. Thus, if you would like a prayer request to remain private and seen only by TILT Leadership, please say so in your comment.

Using the New Living Translation

For reading Scripture, there is a plethora of translations available, all with various strengths and weaknesses. For ease of reading, inclusive language, and expressive language, we prefer to use the New Living Translation (NLT).
